The truth is that if you’re politically powerful, extremely wealthy or even the right person’s brother-in-law you will not face the same jus- tice system as the little people. That’s true even when the crime in question involves an assault on a po- lice officer. Because of the “special relation- ship” between the USA and the U.K., three British Royal Navy sailors accused of assaulting a Dal- las police officer recently have been given their pass- ports and allowed to leave Dallas without arrest or criminal charges. These are the kinds of decisions that get made way above the pay-grade of Dallas Police Chief David Brown. He’s furious, by the way. “It’s pretty extraordinary,” Brown told the Dallas News. “Maybe the facts presented to the grand jury were differ- ent than the facts we know. But he was in uniform, gets kicked and beaten and the suspect doesn’t get indicted? That’s hard to accept.” The grand jury heard the case on March 9. The next morning, the three men went to court but only to collect their passports. They flew home that night. The British sailors were passing through town on a brief layover between training in New Mexico and returning to the U.K. The British Royal Navy decided not to comment. The Dallas Police Dept. said that according to wit- nesses, Senior Corporal G e r a r - do Huante was in full u n i f o r m w h e n h e triedtobreak up a fight in the parking lot of a bar called the C o n c r e t e Cowboy. Police said the sailors repeatedly punched and kicked Huante, and each man was charged with as- sault on a public servant, a third-degree felony. The assault was brutal. “He’s one of our stronger officers, a former power lifter,” Chief Brown told reporters. Corporal Huante was one of 72 officers hon- ored for their response to the attack on Dallas po- lice headquarters last June where a crazed gunman tried to shoot up the place. “Of course there may al- ways be some facts we don’t know, because it’s secret,” said Brown, “but this is very, very disappointing to our officers.” Therestisallprettymurky. Someone pretty high up the food chain decided this thing should just go away, apparently. ChiefBrownsaidhewould be looking into happened in the secret court proceed- ings, but he acknowledged he’s not likely to get very far. He said he would have to “accept the process.” “The officer tried to inter- vene in a fight in full uni- form,” Brown said. “Every- one involved knew he was a Dallas police officer. “These three sailors turned on him, beat him and got him to the ground and continued to assault and kick him. We have no information to contradict any of those facts. Why they weren’t able to hold them accountable is ...” After a long pause Brown continued, “... upsetting. I’m putting that as calmly as I can.” Sailors sent home without charges after beating cop Thankfully he’s expected to make a full recovery “Everyone involved knew he was a Dallas police officer. These three sailors turned on him, beat him and got him to the ground and continued to assault and kick him.” Above: A screen-shot of the three unidentified assailants. www.UnitedByLight.org National PoliceWeek 2016 Your purchases help support the work of the Memorial Fund.
