The rest of us could use a few chuckles or better yet, belly laughs that make one’s abdomi- nal muscles sore. “Keanu,” the new film from Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele, might be just what the doctor ordered, de- pending on one’s personal taste. The story is your standard over-the- top, fish-out-water, buddy movie type deal. A drug dealer is pack- ing product and counting money as he plays with his adorable kitten “Iglesias,” when a notorious pair of hit men storm and shoot the place to smithereens. The kitten makes a daring escape through Los Ange- les. The cat winds up on the doorstep of the character played by Peele (named Rell) who immediately falls in love with the kitty because he’s heartbroken over a re- cent breakup. But while Rell’s away from his apartment, drug dealers break in and steal his stuff, including Keanu. Now Rell and his cousin Clarence (played magnifi- cently by Keegan Michael Key) are on a mission to get Keanu back from a drug dealing crew headed up by “Cheddar,” played by Method Man. But Rell and Clarence are no tough guys, so they pre- tend to be gangsters to try and scare Ched- dar into giving them the kitten back. But Cheddar wants them to go on a drop with his crew before he does so. At one point, when Clarence forgets to talk street and almost blows their cover, Rell tells his cousin he sounds so white it’s like listening to Rich- ard Pryor imperson- ate a white person. But if you’re famil- iar with their work on Comedy Central’s Key and Peele, these guys are not only very funny but also extremely smart. Both comic actors bring believability and energy to scenes and jokes that would fall flat in lesser hands. Method Man turns in an entertaining performance as always and a comedian and actress named Tiffany Had- dish almost steals the show. But the real star of this film is the cat. Apparently some animals, just like some humans, were born to be performers and this little KEANU packed with laughs TV’s smartest comedians hit their first film out of the park, with a “little” help heart-breaking fuzz-ball has to be seen to be believed. The film is rated R but aside from some breasts, n-bombs and f-bombs it’s nothing a teenager hasn’t seen already. Even if you hate cats, the movie’s worth checking out. It’s a great date movie and a decent Hollywood comedy – especially if you’ve got Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart fatigue. Method Man played “Cheese” in “The Wire.” Now it’s “Cheddar.” Tiffany Haddish, left, plays “Hi C.” We’ve Got Your Back.
