The National Law Enforce- mentOfficersMemorialFund held the annual Chairman’s Gala in May at the Ronald Reagan Building and Inter- national Trade Center. For the Gala, National Law Enforcement Museum staffer Sarah Haggerty, with the help from Alyssa Foley, cre- ated a unique 20’ x 8’ mural of a police car made entirely of sticky notes – about 2,500 of them. Each note was individually printed with a quote relevant to law enforcement or by someone in the profession adding an expressive layer to the mural. The inspiration for the mural came from a photo- graph of a police car in the Museum’s collection. “The intent of the mu- ral was to symbolize law enforcement as a mosaic,” Haggerty said, “appreciating law enforcement in America as unique in its enormous di- versity, both in the individu- als and types of officers who serve.” The mural also empha- sized that the uniqueness of American law enforcement is essential to its success. Guests at the Gala were invited to take a part of this mosaic with them as a re- minder of their role in the great mosaic of law enforce- ment. “Approximately 18,000 law enforcement agencies work to protect us every day,” said Rebecca Looney, Senior Di- rector of Exhibits & Programs for the Museum. “This mural helps us show the multifac- eted nature of those agencies and the officer who work for them.” Some of the quotes on the sticky notes included: “My work as Marshal made me the daily witness in the criminal court of a side of the district life to me most painful and repulsive.” – Frederick Douglass “In Valor there is hope” – Tacitus Post-it notes spring to life in Museum Mosaic “There are no better men any- where than the men of the police force.” – Theodore Roosevelt “I lost much on 9/11, but I didn’t lose my liberty or my freedom.” – Chief Joseph Morris Museum Update Construction for the Na- tional Law Enforcement Museum started on April 16, 2016, and has continued through the the rain and the sun. The Museum, a project of the National Law Enforcement Officers Me- morial Fund, will be located adjacent to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC’s Judiciary Square. It will tell the story of American law enforcement through high-tech interac- tive exhibits, comprehensive collection of artifacts, exten- sive resources for research, and diverse educational programming.
