Do not be alarmed children. I am programmed for safety. Don’t believe the anti-police robot media. Mommy, help! The police robot is trying to kill me! S omeone was telling a story the other day about a conversa- tion they had with a parent. The subject of discussion was driver-less cars and the problems they could cause. “Well, at least we don’t have to worry about that sci-fi stuff in our lifetimes,” the parent said. In turns out that was wrong. In California, a Palo Alto toddler was injured by a police robot at the Stan- ford Shopping Center that knocked him over. For good measure the ro- bot then turned around and ran over the child. Here’s the kicker – ABC 7 reported that this was not the robot’s first offense as far assaulting children. Cabs and human cops are so 1997 these days. Uber uses Silicon Valley-manufactured robots to patrol its San Fran- cisco inspection lot. The company that makes the digital rent-a-cop calls it “a new groundbreaking innovation in advanced physical security,” and notes that the technology changes everything and is “especially needed as the world con- tinues to become more and more volatile.” “The robot hit my son’s head and he fell down fac- ing down on the floor and the robot did not stop and it kept moving forward,” Tiffany Teng told reporters. “He was crying like crazy and he never cries.” Yeah, being attacked by a security cyborg tends to have that effect. Things are getting officially weird. If you don’t believe it, run a quick Google search for “skynet NSA,” the fictitious computer program that un- leashed the terminators to kill the humans. Make sure you type the let- ters “NSA” after “skynet.”At any rate, apparently these things are designed to keep us safe. If you feel like you’re living in The Jetsons, you’re not alone It shoulodn’t be too long before we start seeing “pleasure models” and combat-bots like Rutger Hauer in Bladerunner.
