There are more than a few problems with banning people based on their reli- gious beliefs or affiliations. One of those would be the fact it’s wildly uncon- stitutional and flat-out un- American. Change “Muslims” to “Gun-owning white Chris- tian males” and it’s pretty easy to tell this ban stuff is low-grade snake oil. But there’s an even big- ger problem with calls like “Irish need not apply,” and “Muslims go home!” That’s the fact that we might have to deport hero cops like the NYPD’s Sgt. Hameed Armani. In New York City recently, a man in a gold SUV tossed an electric device through the window of a marked New York City Police De- partment van. The device made a click- ing sound and had a flashing red light. Not good. “I’m sitting there and we had just gotten in the van, we were talking and next thing I know, something hits my hand,” NYPD Officer Peter Cybulski told reporters from the Huffington Post. “I was like, ‘Boss, it’s a bomb.’” Cybulski’s boss, Sgt. Ar- mani, was sitting in the driver’s seat. He figured his and Cybul- ski’s time on Earth was up. But that thought lasted about one second. Armani, a dedicated pub- lic servant, knew he was smack dab in the middle of one of the highest value ter- rorist targets on planet Earth – Times Square. “We both look at each other,” Armani said. “I was like, ‘We’re going to go, but I’m not going to have anybody else go with us.’” The two cops, both ex- pecting to be blown to bits, decided to hold on to the device and get it to a less crowded area where it would do less damage. Both men quietly pre- pared for whatever’s next on that nerve-wracking drive. “One thing that crossed my mind really quick was my daughter,” Armani said. “She’s 12 years old, she watches TV now, she un- derstands the news, so every time I leave home, she says, ‘Dad, promise you’re gonna come home.’ ” The device turned out to be harmless – just some sick bastard trying to scare the crap out of the police when they’re already on edge. Neither cop knew that was the case when they risked everything to save lives. Commissioner Bill Bratton called Cybulski and Armani “heroes of this department, heroes of this city” during a press conference. “They put their own lives at risk so that they could save potentially hundreds, if not thousands, of people in Times Square,” Bratton said. In a Facebook post that same day, the NYPD Mus- lim Officers Society wrote, “Can you please inform Donald J. Trump and oth- ers against # Immigrants & # Muslims about this # Heroic # NYPD officer of # Muslim # Afghan roots (our proud member) and his partner.” According to the group’s website, Armani is among nearly 1000 members of the NYPD Muslim Officers Society, some of whom are also immigrants. People will do and say anything to get elected – no matter how stupid, unwork- able or batcrap crazy any of it might be. But if you ask any of the folks that might have been victims of another terrorist attack on New York City, odds are they’d say we need all the Sgt. Armanis we can get. Courage and cowardice Heroes act – cowards talk. NYPD Sgt. Hameed Armani and Officer Peter Cybulski are heroes. That won’t stop some people from calling for Armani’s deportation.
