(David Joles/Star Tribune via AP) According to a recent ar- ticle from the Austin American Statesman, officials with the Austin Police Association either stood up and did the right thing or made a rare critique of one of their own. It all depends on who you’re talking to. The association’s letter comes on the heels of a controversial arrest and use of force captured on video and dash cam. Officers arrested 26-year- old African-American teach- er Breaion King in a video that’s since been watched millions of times on Youtube and Facebook. Union Vice President An- thony Nelson said the fol- lowing in a statement: “We understand the public’s reaction to Officer Richter’s response to resistance. Officer Spradlin’s comments were wrong and not reflective of the values and beliefs of the men and women who serve this community. “We recognize how incidents such as these can divide our city and cause mistrust. “We have met with commu- nity stakeholders and begun a dialogue. “We hope that the conversa- tion will lead to substantive changes that will help bridge that divide.” POA–“We understand” On Campus • Online • Independent Study • U.S. & International Centers UPPER IOWA UNIVERSITY 800-553-4150 uiu.edu/apb “UIU is military friendly and worked with me so I could use my GI Bill and achieve my lifelong dream of a career in criminal justice.” Mike Starkweather ’16 Criminal Justice - Member, Fraternal Order of Police University Program - Partner, International Union of Police Associations (IUPA) - Partner, FBI National Academy Academic Partnership Program
