‘Back the Blue’ vigil honors law enforcement

LEIGHTON — The “Back the blue” vigil is a way to honor the fallen law enforcement officers, as well as those still serving throughout the region.

The annual “Back the Blue” vigil will be Saturday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Cowboy Church of Colbert County, which is located at 3440 Alabama 157, Leighton.

Guest speakers will include representatives from area sheriff’s departments, police chiefs and other members of law enforcement.

A devotional will be conducted by Pastor Truman Sutton of the Cowboy Church.

The program will include a roll call of the fallen officers as blue lights from the various patrol vehicles are flashing.

This is the third year for the blue light vigil.

Amanda Skipworth, whose husband is a deputy, came up with the idea.

“It’s a way to do something positive for law enforcement, to let them know we appreciate them putting their lives on the line every day for us,” Skipworth said.

She said the event has continued to grow, and she believes this year’s event will be the largest yet.
