R.I.P., Nicky

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department recently held a memorial service for Nicky, a canine killed last month after a shooting in northwest Las Vegas.

According to police, Nicky bit the suspect and held on before being killed.

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo also honored Brandon Hughes and Felecia Wimberly-Hughes, who he said lost their lives trying to help a neighbor.

Lombardo also said this about Nicky:

“Today we honor the dedication and commitment Nicky had for his partner and for his service to this community. Nicky was a loyal and dedicated partner who was always happiest being in the truck on patrol with his partner. Nicky’s loss is difficult for our agency and for the community, but it is especially difficult for the K9 section and Sergeant Kerns. Eric, I am very sorry for the loss of your loyal partner. Nicky’s service and sacrifice undoubtedly saved officers’ and citizens’ lives. I have received many emails and personal telephone calls from citizens offering their condolences and their financial support for the K9 Section. Together, we will work to explore options to improve the safety of our canine partners.”
