When most people think about police officers who are killed in the line of duty, if they do at all, they usually think about cops killed by felonious assailants.
This is also true in police culture and police training. Bad guys are generally the focus when it comes to thinking about how to keep cops safe.
But the fact of the matter is, car crashes and other accidents on the roads kill more cops than bad guys by a ratio of roughly two-to-one.
That’s why simple things like getting more officers to wear their seatbelts can have such a huge impact on officer safety metrics.
As to why there are so many cops killed in collisions and accidents, it’s not that hard to understand.
Just check out this footage from a random road rage incident in Florida recently.
It’s a pretty dramatic example of just how dangerous driving can be.
