Even though computers and technology now dominate large parts of law enforcement, the average police officer isn’t any more sophisticated when it comes to things like identity theft and getting hacked for ransom than the average person.
But unlike the average person, part of the job for some police officers involves speaking to community groups about stuff like how to protect yourself online.
Obviously, the safest way is to minimize one’s digital footprint by staying off Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. But as so many of us are now pretty much addicted to social media platforms, that’s probably not a realistic solution.
At the very least, people should be aware of privacy settings, how they work, and how easy it is for crooks to steal your money—or even identity.
