The cocaine trade continued. There are so many people waiting to step up – people with no conscience driven by greed and ruthlessness.” But both agents say the challenge of winning the drug war is about supply and demand. Both men say the sad part is that the U.S. is the leading consumer country in the world of cocaine. This is related to a basic principle of economics – the rule of demand versus supply. “As long as Americans continue to demand cocaine, or any other illegal narcotic, there are people around the world will be willing to pro- vide the supply, regardless of who it hurts or how many people die,” Steve noted. Over the years Steve Mur- phy and Javier Pena were approached several times from people in the film and television industry who were interested in their story. “The first guy who ap- proached us wanted to use our story to make some sort of political statement,” Steve remembered. “We definitely were not inter- ested in that.” Then in 2013 they got a call from Gil Mackland, a retired U.S. Marine who had worked in Colombia at the same time as Javier and Steve. Gil convinced Steve to call Eric Newman, who became the Executive Producer of Narcos. Eric asked if he could fly to Washington, DC, for a meeting and made a deal. Eric Newman and writers Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro arrived for the meet- ing and everything clicked,” Steve said. “Our one demand was we did not want the story to glamorize Escobar and we got their word that would not happen.” For seasons one and two, the former DEA agents served as technical program consultants on the show fielding questions from the writers. “The producers thought it was going to be a hit, but the show surpassed everyone’s expectations,” Steve ex- plained. “It’s been wildly popular.” For these former cops, the experience has been nothing but positive – even if there’s a little too much nudity and foul language. “My language is not the best, but I’ve never dropped that many F-bombs on any- body,” he says, laughing. Both agents were im- pressed with the show’s writers. “Every one of them was very well versed in the his- tory and facts of the situa- tion,” Steve explained. “Mostly they called or emailed us with questions about the details – describe the weapons you used dur- ing a certain incident, what did the cars look like, that kind of thing.” Their contributions to the show did not go unreward- ed. Both former agents at- tended the recent red carpet event for the second season of “Narcos.” “Netflix went out of their way to treat us like royalty, just like the star actors on the show,” Steve said. They even got flown out to a location where filming was taking place in Bogota. “They flew us down to Bogota, and drove us out to the set,” Steve remem- bered. “We got the whole bit – wardrobe, makeup, even our own personal trail- ers. They gave us a cameo appearance in the final epi- sode and that was pretty cool.” Steve retired from DEA in June 2013, and Javier retired in January 2014. In addition to working with Netflix on the series, Javier and Steve have a speaking business, DEA Narcos LLC, in which they travel to various venues around the world telling the true story about Escobar and his organization. If you are interested in booking Steve and Javier to speak at an event or to obtain more information, check out their website, www.DEAN- arcos.com or email them at SteveMurphy@deanarcos. com and JavierPena@ deanarcos.com. One of the reasons the show is so good is the writers talked with the real DEA agents the show’s based on.
