AMERICAN POLICE BEAT: MAY 2017 9 Earlier this year in Gold Beach, Senior Trooper Paul Rushton responded to a property regarding two injured bald eagles. When he arrived, he found what appeared to be two mature injured bald eagles lying together in a damp ravine. According to the land- owners, the bald eagles were found earlier that morning in the small watery ditch. Sr. Trooper Rushton was able to safely load each of the eagles into a separate animal carrier. A quick examination of each determined that one of the eagles possibly had an injured wing; the other eagle appeared to be dis- tressed but uninjured. Both eagles were trans- ported to Wildlife Images Rehabilitation & Education Center in Grants Pass. Eagle fights and pair bonding both involve birds in flight clutching each oth- er’s talons and tumbling towards the earth. This is possibly why the tangled birds fell. The area the birds were located in had high winds and many trees. Sr. Trooper Rushton was updated on the birds’ status after they arrived at Wildlife Images. One of the birds had a small tear in its wing muscle. The other one appears to be in good health. Both are doing very well. Rescued eagle says: “Let me tell you about Trooper Rushton. That guy’s got a lot of guts. Me and my wife were terrified she might have clawed him up real good. But the guy was so professional and gentle, she was able to relax while Paul rescued us. They say there’s never a cop around when you need one. But they don’t know jack about Paul [right] and the Oregon State Police.” From the Oregon State Police Facebook page: The beak and talons of the raptor are lethal weapons used on prey. They are made of keratin and therefore grow continu- ally, just like human fingernails. The beak is strong but can also be used for more delicate things like grooming a mate and feeding a baby chick.
