According to reports from WTLV in Florida, the red-light cameras in Jacksonville are coming down. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has decided not to renew their contract with the camera vendors. Sheriff Mike Williams made the announcement recently during a budget hearing. Williams said the cameras have not worked as advertised. “We don’t reduce crashes with red-light cameras,” Williams said to City Coun- cil members, according to WTLV News. The red-light cameras were wheeled out in 2012 and were in place when Williams took office. The crash-avoidance technology sold with the red light cameras is adver- tised as being able to detect when someone runs a red light and holds the other three lights red to prevent crashes. Williams said drivers quickly adjusted to the cameras but that crashes did not drop the way ex- perts had hoped. Williams said Jackson- ville Sheriff’s Office might look at the technology again once it works the way it is intended to. For now the high-risk intersections will still be closely monitored by offi- cers. Imagine that – police doing police stuff instead of robots.
