In Michigan, undercover cops will no longer be im- mune from prosecution for having sex with prostitutes that they’re investigating un- der a bill that unanimously passed a Senate committee recently. Michigan was the only state left that had laws on the books protecting cops that had sex with hookers during investigations. “This is as succinctly writ- ten as anyone could make it. It eliminates the opportu- nity for those in undercover law enforcement to engage in sexual intercourse with someone they’re investigat- ing,” said Sen. Judy Em- mons, R-Sheridan, who sponsored the bill. It’s unclear if undercover police officers were having sex with prostitutes as a mat- ter of course in their investi- gations but for appearances sake, pretty much everyone agrees that the change in the law is a good idea. The Senate Judiciary Committee agreed with Chairman Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge. “As a former sheriff, no modern-day police depart- ment would ever allow this. This makes so much sense,” Jones said. The state of Hawaii, where prostitution is such a huge part of the tourism industry, had a similar policy that allowed cops to have sex with hookers without fear of arrest or prosecution – but they changed the law in 2014. Local and state police have said that sex during an undercover operation is not a tactic that they really ever used much. The bill, SB 275, now moves to the full Senate.
