AMERICAN POLICE BEAT: SEPTEMBER 2017 29 Unfortunately due to spotty and voluntary report- ing from law enforcement agencies, we really have no idea just how bad the increase in the volume of hate crimes really is in terms of data. But the anecdotal evidence suggests they’re way up and show no signs of tapering off anytime soon. Take William Scott Plan- er. He’s just the latest white supremacist charged with vandalizing and attacking Muslim or Jewish places of worship, cemeteries and schools across the United States. The Anti Defamation League says that Planer was arrested July 14, 2017 when he was caught posting stick- ers reading “Fight Terror, Nuke Israel” on the door of the Chabad Lubavitch Jewish Center in Colorado Springs. Now the Denver man is being held in the El Paso County Sheriff’s Depart- ment on a $500,000 bond for other felony charges he faces in California. In California Planer is accused of assault with a deadly weapon and partici- pation in a riot. The alleged attacks were on a protester during a white supremacist march in June 2016 in Sacramento. The ADL says they’ve had this guy on their radar for years and he’s well- known for his association with white supremacist groups such as the Golden State Skinheads and the Traditionalist Workers Party (TWP). Planer appears to be one of those “professional pro- testors” people are always complaining about. He was also involved in an April 29, 2017 white supremacist rally in Pikev- ille, Kentucky that was also organized by various racist groups. Most recently Planer’s been in Boulder, Colorado with the Proud Boys, a group of lonely misfits that promote racism, xenopho- bia and misogyny while railing against “political correctness” and liberals. It must be nice to have the kind of money where you don’t need to work and just travel the country slapping stickers on houses of wor- ship and hanging out with your fellow rageaholics. Professional protestor Most of these clowns have an enormous digital footprint One of the reasons the definition of “terrorism” is so hard to pin down is that the term means different things to different people. Many criticized the previ- ous administration for failing to say “radical Islamic terrorism” in the same way critics today wonder why the current administration won’t say “radical right wing terrorism.” Do labels really matter or not?
