4 AMERICAN POLICE BEAT: SEPTEMBER 2017 Jordan Spieth is what’s known as a “comer.” He began the final round of this year’s British Open with a three-shot lead over his playing partner, Matt Kuchar. Then everything fell apart, as it so often does in the great game of golf. After escaping the 13th hole with just a bogey following a bizarre drop on the driving range, Spieth (trailing by one) nearly aced 14 and sunk an eagle putt on the 15th to win. E mployees from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Pennsyl- vania will be getting help paying for classes going toward degree programs at Montgomery County Community College. Sher- iff Sean P. Kilkenny and Montgomery County Com- Scholarship fund for deputies and other employees munity College (MCCC) President Dr. Kevin Pollock introduced the Sheriff’s Office Scholarship Fund, a partnership dedicated to providing affordable higher education to employees of the Sheriff’s Office. “Our large staff is highly trained and hardworking,” Sheriff Kilkenny said. “I wanted to help them with furthering their education, with the hopes that they would be able to move closer to reaching their highest professional level.” The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in Montgomery County with 115 sworn staff and 25 civilians. Though a college degree is not required for employment, applicants who have a post- secondary education are given more consideration. “I think that having col- lege experience can help our law enforcement and office staff provide bet- ter service to the public, and make our operation run more efficiently,” said Kilkenny. Money for the scholar- ship fund will come from proceeds raised at an an- nual golf outing and other fundraisers. Current employees, pre- vious employees with over 10 years of service, and immediate family members are eligible to apply. Stu- dents will not be required to show financial need; however, they must be en- rolled in a degree program at the college, and in good academic standing.
