Police officers in Portland, Oregon, recently had an interesting night on the job luring a pig that was blocking traffic off the road with snacks.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, it all started when an officer encountered a traffic jam while she was driving at around midnight on April 27, when she noticed vehicles in front of her braking and swerving to avoid something in the roadway.
“As she approached, the officer saw that the object was actually a pig standing in the eastbound travel lanes of Southeast Division Street,” the department reported in a news release.
Other officers arrived to assist, then called animal control and created a “human perimeter” to protect their new “pig friend” from drivers. They also worked to direct traffic.
To make the pig more amenable to orders and to establish a “rapport,” one officer brought an array of snacks for the animal to feast on.
“In an effort to keep the pig calm and contained, an officer arrived with snacks, including Goldfish crackers and cookies (he was not a fan of nacho cheese Doritos),” the news release stated.
Personnel from the On Call Community Rescue for Animals organization soon arrived and were able to hoist the pig into a crate.
“At this time, the pig remains known as John Doe, though many other creative names were suggested including one after a famous actor whose last name is Bacon,” police joked.
Police are asking for the owner to come forward and claim the animal.
