Apple AirTag outsmarts thieves in $500,000 jewelry heist

A tourist’s visit to a pizzeria in Queens, New York, turned into a nightmare when thieves made off with a suitcase containing $500,000 worth of jewelry. Luckily, thanks to a hidden Apple AirTag, NYPD officers quickly tracked down two suspects involved in the massive heist.

Sandro Angiolini, 50, had just parked his car outside Rosa’s Pizza on 21st Street when a black SUV pulled up. As he walked toward the restaurant, three men jumped out of the SUV, attacked him, and wrestled away his silver suitcase, NYPD sources reported.

The brazen attack happened in plain view of Rosa’s Pizza manager, Arif Chowdhury, who described the chaos.

“It happened right in front of my window,” Chowdhury told the New York Daily News. “There was one white car that pulled up behind his black car as he got out. There were three guys — all three of them got out and grabbed his bag. They fought, they were punching and kicking him, and they got away with his bag. When he came in, he said they had been following him and his bag was full of jewelry. He was parking here because his daughter lives in the neighborhood.”

The suspects fled east on 31st Avenue, leaving Angiolini bruised but determined. Unknown to the robbers, Angiolini had placed an Apple AirTag in the suitcase, allowing NYPD detectives to pinpoint its exact location. Officers tracked the bag to an address on 217th Street in Bayside, where they arrested Brayan Pulido Pedina, 23, and Sandy Pulido, 22.

Both suspects now face charges of criminal possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment and unlawful fleeing from police. Brayan also faces an additional charge of resisting arrest. The two suspects reside at the same College Point address, but their relationship remains unclear.

While the suitcase was recovered, police have yet to locate the stolen jewelry. Investigators believe additional suspects may have been involved and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
