This spring, students from several Mount Prospect Academy locations in New Hampshire were invited to attend MPA K9 Day to witness the multiple jobs assigned to canine members of the Campton, Bristol and Conway police departments, along with members of the State Police and New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office. The dogs demonstrated tactics to apprehend suspects, detect bombs and sniff out clues during search-and-rescue operations. The Fire Marshal canine showed students how he discerns flammable liquids.
The event organizer, Campton Police Detective Kristin Tracy, also introduced Miller, whose duties within the department include serving as a comfort dog.
“Maybe we should start being proactive, instead of always reactive, always going when they’re in crisis, or it’s always going to be a negative experience,” Tracy told The Laconia Daily Sun. “So I thought, well, what better way to maybe make a positive experience with these kids, to maybe help us in the future, than with the dogs?”
