A pair of burglars in Florida were arrested on December 31 after one of them called 9-1-1 for help moving stolen items from a home they were breaking into.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the two individuals were in the midst of burglarizing a house when one called police with the intention of asking for some extra assistance and a ride to the airport. However, the person did not speak during the call, prompting the sheriff’s office to investigate.
Responding deputies arrived at the home and found that a male suspect and his girlfriend had entered the property via an unlocked door. It was soon discovered that neither of the two had ties to the house and were trespassing.
Deputies identified the man as the suspect of a break-in and robbery of a Dollar General Store that occurred earlier that day in Poinciana, Florida. The man had been caught on the store’s surveillance video.
While talking with the suspects, the female admitted that she had phoned 9-1-1 for help from law enforcement to move the belongings from the house they were looting. She also aimed to score a ride to the airport so the couple could spend a weekend in New York.
“Deputies DID help them with their belongings, and DID give them a ride, but it wasn’t to the airport … it was to the Polk Pokey,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post. “And they are welcome to stay there all weekend long. The Polk Pokey is much better than New York anyway.”
The male suspect was later charged with burglary and theft related to the store and burglary of a residence. His female accomplice was also charged with burglary of a residence.
Police took the opportunity to have a bit of fun at the burglars’ expense. Along with its post, the sheriff’s office included a cartoon of the incident that quoted Martin from the ’90s TV series Martin: “Daaaang Gina! That’s some real sitcom stuff there.”
“I didn’t know the motto was ‘Serve, Protect, and Help Move Your Stuff,’” one commenter joked. “Florida has some well-rounded police departments.”
