Evesham Police Department Officer Kevin Long is being recognized for heroically rescuing an elderly New Jersey couple from an house fire on June 16.
Body camera footage captured Long, who was the first to arrive on scene, sprinting over to the property, which was being engulfed by smoke. Once he entered the home, Long encountered a woman, who he urged to go outside.
“Hey! You alright? It’s fully engulfed. Get out!” he said. The woman was frantic that her husband was trapped inside. Police say the two victims are in their 70s and the man is unable to walk due to a medical condition.
Continuing through the smoke, Long came across the man, who was seated in a chair next to a wheelchair. Long quickly pulled the wheelchair out of the front door and dragged the man in the chair out of the home.
Police say both residents were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Firefighters were also able to contain the fire to the kitchen, preventing it from damaging neighboring homes.
“Without hesitation and under extremely hazardous conditions, Officer Long entered the home and navigated through almost zero visibility to affect a rescue of the trapped resident,” the department wrote in a press release.
“From the video, [the woman] kept trying to go back into the apartment,” Chief Walt Miller added. “If [Long] is not there as quickly as he is, that wife is in the house with him, and quickly they would both have succumbed to the smoke. So he saved two lives that day.”
The end of the bodycam video shows Long rescuing the man before falling to the ground from smoke inhalation.
“He was confronted with a large amount of smoke and couldn’t see what was going on,” Chief Walt Miller said. “He was subjected to the smoke and limited visibility, but fortunately, he was able to make contact with the gentleman and remove him from the residence. He then got back up and evacuated the other 16 apartments.”
The department recently honored Long with a commendation for his bravery. Long has been with the Evesham Police Department for nine years.
