Some of cinema’s greatest moments have dealt with the long arm of the law’s pursuit of desperate criminals. The Fugitive saw Harrison Ford trying to convince Tommy Lee Jones of his innocence, while U.S. Marshals saw Jones pursuing an equally innocent Wesley Snipes.
One hastens to add that Snipes is apparently a pretty tough dude in real life, having spent a great deal of time training in various martial arts. So, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see a sequel where his character stumbles clumsily between the ceiling joists of an attic he was hiding in to come crashing down to his pursuers. Life may imitate art from time to time, and there may be fugitives from justice who elude the police on occasion. That wasn’t the case for Deario Wilkerson, a murder suspect in Memphis.
Wilkerson was on the run for murder. Some real-world U.S. marshals, along with members of the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and Memphis P.D., were able to track him to a house in downtown Memphis. Wilkerson took refuge in the attic, but was apparently unaware that ceiling sheetrock isn’t made to support the weight of a man fleeing the cops. He was taken into custody after he came crashing through the ceiling.
While Wilkerson wasn’t injured in the fall, he nevertheless now has access to medical care, courtesy of the criminal justice system. He was taken into custody without further incident.
