There’s the pedophile in a position of power in a church or a school. There’s the neighborhood wife-beater responsible for three calls per week. But there’s a special place in hell for someone that targets the most vulnerable like children, the elderly and the homeless. During a recent 12-day police manhunt for a se- rial killer targeting home- less men across San Diego, officers came across a fifth victim screaming in pain from injury. An hour later they had a suspect. The latest victim, a 55- year-old man who was at- tacked while he was sleeping near an Interstate overpass, is expected to survive. San Diego police arrested Jon David Guerrero, 39. Guer- rero faces three counts of murder, two counts of at- tempted murder and two counts of arson. As is frequently the case these days with the worst of the worst violence, the mental health system (or lack thereof) appears to be a factor. Records indicate a long history of arrests and men- tal competency hearings, including one judge’s order that sent Guerrero to Patton State Hospital for psychiatric treatment. Chief Shelly Zimmerman, also present at the news con- ference, stressed that they are confident Guerrero is the serial killer police have been looking for. “I firmly believe, and want everyone to know, I am firmly confident Guerrero is the suspect,” Zimmerman said. Police Capt. David Nisleit has led the investigation since the first victim was slain, then set on fire on July 3 of this year. He says evidence obtained from the suspect’s residence “definitively links” Guerrero to the killings. “We have the right person in jail,” he said. “This is just good police work – having a lot of officers available in a quick minute to flood an area, looking at all possible avenues of escape.” Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. – Matthew 25:31-46
