American Police Beat: January 2018 29 T he subway in Manhattan can be a frightening place. There can be drunks, fistfights and sexual assaults. But the subway ride two young parents had recently was fine, right up until their baby stopped breathing. The 11-month-old infant had some kind of medical crisis as the subway ar- rived at Eighth Ave. and 42nd St. at Port Authority Bus Terminal. The parents were nat- urally freaking out, but NYP D Officer Dan- iel Velasquez immedi- ately started perform- ing CPR. Sgt. Mike Reilly told reporters he heard a dis- turbance outside the com- mand center and saw Of- ficer Velasquez working on the baby. But the kid wasn’t responsive. Cops do their best in these situations, but they’re not diagnosticians. Not even many doctors are good diagnosticians. But Officer John Wil- liams arrived on the scene and immediately recog- nized certain symptoms. “I noticed the baby was extremely hot and over- heating. I realized she was having a febrile seizure – you just overheat,” Wil- liams said. The plan was clear – they had to cool the kid down before it was too late. Williams went to work cutting off the baby’s clothes and screamed for other officers to get some ice. Once he had the ice packs in place on the kid’s belly, behind her neck, and between her legs, things got better fast. “Almost instantly, she cooled down and started crying,” Williams said. The officers told report- ers with PIX 11 News that they’re no heroes and chalked up the save to their CPR training. Cop’s on-the- spot diagnosis saves baby’s life Talk about ‘right place – right time’ The NYPD officers (above) that managed to save an overheating infant on the subway get interviewed on the local news. I’m the nicest guy in the world, you moron! At some point we all have to admit that the job makes us cranky from time to time. For instance, here’s one guy yelling/typ- ing at another guy in a thread on a police Facebook page about training to increase communication skills in law enforcement interactions. “Not only do I think this training is a joke, but I think that YOU are a joke also. I’ve been doing this for 21 years and my people skills are just fine.” ★ RAPTOR by DeSantis CONCEALMENT PERFECTED! MADE IN THE U.S.A.
