Major events will be policed T o be honest, it kind of seems like something that should have happened already. But according to the New York Post, elite officers from NYPD special units armed with high-pow- ered rifles will soon be watching over every event at major stadiums as a counter-terrorism mea- sure. At the time this was written, the NYPD was sending dozens of spe- cially trained officers to Madison Square Garden in Manhattan and Brook- lyn’s Barclays Center. The officers will be around during any sports games, concerts and other large events. The newly assigned officers recently got a couple of weeks of training for the new as- signment. They also took a second training course to get up to speed on their new semiautomatic Colt M4 Commando rifles. The officers will also be equipped with spe- cial helmets, vests, gun slings, headsets and even special uniforms. Police Commissioner James O’Neill actually ordered all this just after the attack that killed 22 people at England’s Man- chester Arena at the end of an Ariana Grande show last May. The move marks a change from the way the NYPD used to handle security at major venues. P r e v i o u s l y , c o p s from the NYPD’s elite Emergency Services Unit, the Strategic Re- sponse Group and the Critical Response Com- mand worked the stadi- ums intermittently. The plan is to have the newly trained officers with the new rifles in place by next summer at Yankee Stadium, Citi Field and MCU Park. Again – those venues will be protected by special officers from nearby precincts as op- posed to ESU or SRG. Members of the NYPD Counter Terrorism Unit (above).
