Sheriff Jenkins and one of his employees, Vanessa Blackstock, spent $3,500 to fly to Las Vegas to pick up a suspect wanted for grand larceny in 2015. Lat- er that year the two also spent $4,427 flying first class to San Diego to pick up a woman on forgery charges. Two Culpeper deputies who traveled on that same California trip to pick up a second fugi- tive both flew coach. Jenkins said it comes down to his large frame. “Anyone who has flown knows the size of airline seats.Iamabigman.Ineed a big seat,” Jenkins said according to NBC News. Nevertheless, several deputies speaking anony- mously to reporters ques- tioned the spending. When asked by NBC reporters if it seemed odd for the sheriff to be going on first class extradition trips, one of the deputies said, “Yeah, I think ‘odd’ is a good word.” The agency says there’s no travel records and stuff like this is handled informally. “We do not have any records specific to the sheriff’s travel. His travel does not require approv- al,” spokespersons for the agency said. Asked if first class air travel was common for ex- tradition trips one deputy said, “Oh, absolutely not. We would fly coach.” One of the deputies who talked to reporters cover- ing the story said others at the agency knew about the practice but didn’t really discuss it.
