Detectives from the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU) saved a distressed woman who was hanging from the roof of a city high-rise in a heart-pounding rescue last week.
The intense rescue happened around 3:10 p.m. on May 1 after ESU detectives responded to a call regarding a woman who appeared to be ready to jump from the ledge of a 54-story building.
The video posted online by the NYPD shows at least two ESU members holding onto the woman’s left arm through a slight opening of the seven-foot-high barriers while another officer tethered to a rope jumped over the glass wall to join another ESU member who was already assisting the woman on the ledge.
“You alright? We’re going to help get you back over this thing,” one officer is heard telling the woman.
“Stand her up. Lift her up, and I want her leg over,” another officer on the safe side of the glass advised the two harnessed officers.
“Got her?” one asked as the team carefully pulled her over before letting her fall a few feet to the ground. A sigh of relief from the rescuing officers was then heard on the footage once the woman was safe.
The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital, authorities said.
“When the public needs help, they call the police,” the NYPD said on Facebook. “When the police need help, they call ESU.”
