A person dressed as the “Ghostface” killer from the horror movie franchise Scream recently scared people in Sonoma County, California, and prompted several 9-1-1 calls from concerned residents.
The Sonoma County Police Department received multiple calls about the person dressed in a Scream costume and standing motionless on the street corner outside Sonoma Plaza on Monday, February 27.
Video captured by Visit Sonoma’s webcam showed the individual wearing the iconic costume from the film in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.
Police immediately sought out the individual to get to the bottom of the strange case.
“This individual has been contacted and was hired by a company through Paramount to promote the new Scream movie,” the department explained in a Facebook post.
Rob Dillion, a spokesperson for the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, said the sheriff’s office later contacted Paramount Pictures but did not receive a response. Dillion did not say whether responding officers told the individual to leave the area.
“I saw him and he was just standing there in the rain! Creepy,” one person commented.
Scream VI is the latest film in the franchise, and its release date is March 10.
As to why the promotion took place in Sonoma, UPI reported that scenes from the original 1996 Scream movie were filmed across Sonoma County, including near Sonoma Square.
