Recently released body-camera footage from the Miami Police Department showcased the heroic actions of Officer Ernesto Fernandez, who went above and beyond the call of duty to save a drowning child after he fell into the Miami River.
The daring rescue took place in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood on July 19, around 3:15 p.m.
According to authorities, Officer Fernandez was on patrol when he noticed the child walking precariously along the river. In an unfortunate turn of events, the child slipped out of Fernandez’s sight and moments later, he was struggling in the water.
Without hesitation, Fernandez leaped into the river in an effort to save the young boy. Miami Police Captain Freddie Cruz later commended the officer in a statement.
“He (Fernandez) immediately jumps in the river, doesn’t even think about losing his body-worn camera, but he is able to save a child, and that’s what it’s all about,” Cruz said.
The ordeal was captured on Fernandez’s body camera, capturing the intense moment as Fernandez ran toward the bank of the river, fearlessly diving in to rescue the struggling child.
The boy’s parents, filled with gratitude, revealed to the police that their son is autistic.
Cruz later shared that Fernandez himself is the father of an autistic child himself, which made the rescue deeply meaningful to him.
“The officer’s son is also autistic, so this hit home,” Cruz stated.
In the aftermath of the rescue, the officer was understandably distressed, and was granted a few days off to cope with the emotional toll.
However, in a touching gesture, Fernandez took some time out of his busy shift to visit the young boy and presented him with a heartfelt gift card.
The card’s message read: “The circumstances on how we met might not be the best, but I am fortunate we came across each other’s path that day. You will always have a special place in my heart.”
Authorities report that the child is in good condition following the incident, thanks to the quick and selfless actions of Officer Ernesto Fernandez.
Miami residents and the community at large also praised Fernandez for his bravery and compassion.
