Officer Matthew Sech of the Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Police Department was on vacation with his family in New Hampshire when he heard screams coming from the shoreline.
“My wife started screaming my name, and I looked, and she started pointing to a beach area where we were, and she’s pointing to one end of the beach,” Sech told ABC 9. “I saw a woman holding her child, and the woman was giving her child back slaps to the back. So, I rushed over. At that time, I asked the woman what was going on, and she said, ‘My daughter was underwater and she’s not breathing.’”
Sech immediately jumped into action.
“Without hesitation, Officer Sech rushed to the scene and delivered several back blows to the child to expel water from her lungs,” the department said in a statement. “The child regained consciousness but remained lethargic.”
Paramedics arrived shortly after and rushed the child to the hospital. Police said the 2-year-old, who was not identified, was later allowed to go home and is reportedly in good health.
“We applaud Officer Sech for his courage and swift response, which unquestionably saved a young life,” Chelmsford Deputy Police Chief Gary Hannagan said in a statement. “His commitment to public safety goes beyond his official duties, exemplifying the highest standards of our department.”
After six years with the Chelmsford police, Sech, who has CPR and EMT training, said he didn’t think; he just jumped into action.
“I’m just glad I was at the right place at the right time and was able to help and provide my training. I can say for that positive outcome,” Sech said.
