A California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer in Santa Barbara County is being hailed as a hero after he risked his life to rescue a severely injured pilot from a burning plane, just moments before it exploded.
On January 29, CHP Officer Ayala was conducting a routine traffic stop on Los Carneros Road, just north of U.S. Route 101, when he was startled by a sudden explosion.
Looking up, he saw an aircraft’s ballistic recovery system deployed and observed the plane’s deployed parachute. A small plane had just crashed into an empty field near the freeway.
“Without hesitation, Officer Ayala abandoned the traffic stop, letting the driver go without issuing a citation,” the department said on Facebook. “He immediately entered northbound U.S. 101 and, as he approached the crash site, saw the crashed plane engulfed in flames. Realizing time was critical, he pulled over onto the right shoulder, jumped a chain-link freeway perimeter fence, and sprinted toward the burning aircraft.”
As Officer Ayala called for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department and an ambulance, he could smell the burning fuel filling the air. He then noticed movement — the severely injured pilot was struggling to crawl out of the wreckage. With flames spreading quickly and threatening to engulf the aircraft, every second counted.
“Officer Ayala didn’t hesitate — he grabbed the pilot’s arms and pulled with all his strength, dragging the injured pilot away from the growing flames,” the department said. “Just as they stumbled a few yards to safety, an explosion erupted behind them. The plane was now fully engulfed in flames.”
Two civilians rushed in to assist Officer Ayala. He directed one civilian to help the other passenger — who self-extricated from the aircraft — to safety, while the other civilian remained on scene for emergency services.
“Both the pilot and the passenger were transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for medical treatment,” the department said. “Thanks to Officer Ayala’s quick-thinking and bravery, a tragedy was averted. His heroic actions were a testament to his unwavering dedication to public safety service and to those who risk their lives to save others. A special thank-you to the civilians who assisted with the plane’s passenger.”
