Across the country, law enforcement agencies are using summer camps to build trust, teach life skills and spark career interest. In York, South Carolina, police hosted a free camp for kids 7–13 with games, first responder demos and visits from EMS and fire crews.
In Idaho Falls, high schoolers scuba-dived and toured a jail through the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office’s career camp. And in Nebraska, the Grand Island Police Department launched a series of middle school transition camps focused on leadership, communication and teamwork.
“It shows a different side to the officers that they may not see,” program volunteer Miranda Obermiller told KSNB. “It shows that they are a friendly face and that they are a trusted adult that these kids can turn to in need of help or in need of anything.”
