Florida man arrested for alleged abduction of missing Ohio teen found through World of Warcraft account

A disturbing case has highlighted the risks teens face online after a 31-year-old Florida man was arrested for allegedly abducting a missing 16-year-old girl from Ohio, with authorities tracing her whereabouts through the popular online video game, “World of Warcraft.”

Thomas Ebersole was apprehended by Detective Henrick Osthed on January 3 following a joint effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies.

The FBI had sought assistance from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office in locating the missing teenager after she disappeared from Lima, Ohio, on December 28, 2023.

Investigators discovered the girl’s location after she logged into her “World of Warcraft” account from Ebersole’s home address in Dunnellon, roughly 25 miles southwest of Ocala.

“World of Warcraft,” a “massively multiplayer online role-playing game,” or MMORPG, allows millions of players to interact and build their characters within a virtual world.

Subsequent inquiries revealed that Ebersole also possessed a World of Warcraft account accessed from the same location.

Upon initial contact with Ebersole, he denied any knowledge of the missing girl.

However, under further questioning, he reportedly admitted to driving to Ohio, meeting the juvenile victim, and bringing her back to his Florida residence.

Shockingly, Ebersole claimed to be in a romantic relationship with the minor, expressing his intention to hide her in his home and eventually marry her.

Ebersole is now facing serious charges, including interfering with child custody, traveling to meet a minor for sexual activity and sheltering an unmarried minor.

He is currently held without bond at the Marion County Jail.

Detective Osthed revealed that Ebersole willingly provided messages from the online chat app Discord, outlining explicit plans to meet the girl in Ohio and engage in sexual activity.

These messages served as incriminating evidence against him.

“Ebersole provided Detective (Henrik) Osthed with Discord messages that further outlined his plans to meet the victim in Ohio and engage in sexual activity despite knowing that he was committing a crime,” authorities said in a Facebook post.

The case shed light on the increasing threat of online exploitation of children, as highlighted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCME).

The organization reported an 82% surge in online enticement of children for sexual acts since 2021 and a 113% increase since 2020.

One factor contributing to this trend, according to the NCME, is the rise in financialsextortion, where children are coerced into sharing explicit photos under the threat of exposure.

Discord, a popular chat messaging app with 150 million users worldwide, has been implicated in facilitating such crimes.

Discord has faced criticism for instances involving child predators using the platform to groom and exploit minors.

In response, the company disabled over 128,000 accounts and removed 7,736 servers for child safety between July and September 2023.

Discord’s third-quarter transparency report also indicated a 40% increase in reported accounts to NCME.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement authorities advocated for educating parents and guardians about the potential dangers lurking in online spaces and the necessity of monitoring their children’s online activities.
