In the wake of escalating tensions between law enforcement agencies and segments of the community, one Florida high school student has taken it upon himself to bridge the divide with his podcast entitled Trust the Badge.
Jasur Talipov, a local Orlando student, is on a mission to to cultivate trust and understanding through his podcast.
Talipov’s journey into podcasting began two years ago amid growing calls to reform policing practices and calls to defund the police.
Witnessing firsthand the strained relationship between law enforcement and the public, particularly in his community, Talipov saw an opportunity to make a difference.
“I think these conversations are necessary,” Talipov told Click Orlando. “It’s not hard to have them, but it’s key to have both sides come to a middle. Once you have both sides come to a middle, then you can start to see some solutions.”
Operating from the corner of his bedroom, Talipov’s podcast has become a platform for dialogue, hosting a diverse range of guests, including current officers, politicians and citizens.
With over 20 episodes under his belt, Talipov is committed to showcasing varied perspectives to foster understanding.
Reflecting on his inspiration, Talipov recalls his time as a volunteer at the Altamonte Springs Police Department’s substation in Altamonte Mall.
“Some of the people seemed afraid just to be seen by law enforcement from inside the office,” Talipov shared. “So it really touched me and made me feel like there’s a lot of distrust, and I feel like there shouldn’t be.”
Keenly aware of the issues plaguing both law enforcement and the community, Talipov delves into topics ranging from officer retirement rates to crime statistics.
Deana DiPaola, COPS coordinator and public information officer for the Altamonte Police Department, commended Talipov’s efforts, noting his dedication to humanizing law enforcement.
“He’s humanizing the badge and showing what we do and that we are people behind this badge,” DiPaola affirms.
Through his podcast, Talipov aims to dismantle stereotypes and foster empathy between law enforcement and the community.
The Trust The Badge podcast is available on various platforms including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube, reaching audiences far and wide.
In addition to his podcasting endeavors, Talipov has also established Trust The Badge as a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting understanding and cooperation between law enforcement and communities globally.
The organization offers a range of resources, including podcast episodes and research studies, to facilitate constructive dialogue and mutual respect.
