The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) on April 15 announced Sergeant Dave Musgrove of the Charlotte County, Florida, Sheriff’s Department as its Officer of the Month for February 2024. Sergeant Musgrove was selected for his actions when he rescued a 6-month-old baby from the vehicle she was riding in after a speeding motorcyclist slammed into the vehicle.
On the evening of February 8, Musgrove was driving his patrol vehicle when a motorcyclist sped past him at over 100 mph in another lane. Seconds later, he saw a bright light and a plume of dust and smoke. He immediately activated his emergency lights and pulled up to the intersection where the motorcycle had collided with another vehicle. As Musgrove exited his vehicle, he heard screaming and ran toward the vehicle where he observed a baby trapped in the backseat, underneath the now-deceased motorcyclist. Sergeant Musgrove eventually freed the baby and began lifesaving measures.
“In moments of crisis, true heroes emerge. Sergeant Dave Musgrove’s actions exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement,” NLEOMF CEO William Alexander said. “We are humbled and proud to honor him as our Officer of the Month for February 2024.”
