Suffolk County, Rhode Island, Police Officer Matthew Ingui is being hailed as a hero after rescuing three dogs from a house fire on May 26.
A couple hours into his shift, Ingui responded to call about a house fire. When he arrived, neighbors were waiting outside the residence and smoke could be seen pouring out of the house.
“You could see the smoke coming out of the house when I got there,” Ingui told Newsday. “The first thing I always ask is, ‘Is anyone in the house?’ [The neighbors] told me the homeowners are not home, but there are dogs in the house.”
He then jumped into action, running up the front steps before popping the window out and climbing through the front window. “I just started grabbing the dogs, handing them to the neighbor outside the window, and we got them out,” he shares.
Ingui added that the dogs were barking as the smoke from the fire began to rise out of the basement and into the main floor of the house.
“They were on the couch; they looked a little nervous since it was starting to get a little smoky in there,” Ingui told ABC 7 NY. “I have three dogs myself. I treated them like they were my dogs; I just had to get them out and make sure they were safe.”
Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and the fire is believed to be noncriminal. Ingui and his new pals posed for a photo shortly after the rescue, with all the dogs seeming thankful to be unharmed thanks to the officer’s swift actions.
