A video released by the Glen Rock Police Department in New Jersey captured officers coming to the aid of a fawn stuck in a neighborhood fence on May 29.
“It’s not every day that you get called to assist a baby deer stuck in a fence,” the department said on Facebook. “Hopefully, this little one made it safely back to its mama!”
According to the state of New Jersey, if residents find a fawn lying alone, they should leave it there. “The mother comes back several times each day to nurse the fawn,” the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife Department says. “If you’ve already picked the fawn up and brought it home — put it back. Even one or two days after removal from the wild, fawns have been successfully reunited with their mothers.
After the police posted the video of the rescue, the homeowner commented on the post, saying that the young deer’s cries had caught the attention of the mother, but there wasn’t a lot the mom could do.
“Shout-out and big thanks to the GRPD!” wrote the resident. “That was my house this morning! The crying brought the big mother deer, but our two wonderful officers of the Glen Rock Police Department didn’t miss a beat getting the little one out safely!”
