A typical Monday afternoon quickly turned into a life-or-death situation for a 11-year-old boy who fell through the ice at Franklin Lake in West Long Branch, New Jersey, on February 3.
At approximately 2:41 p.m., police received a distress call reporting the incident, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.
Patrolman Dave Brosonski, the first officer to arrive on the scene, quickly assessed the dire situation. The boy had attempted to take a shortcut home by going across the lake when the ice gave way beneath him, leaving him stranded in the frigid water.
“Without hesitation, Ptl. Brosonski entered the frigid water and successfully rescued the 11-year-old boy,” the department said on Facebook.
Body camera footage captured the dramatic rescue, showing Brosonski enlisting the help of a community member to secure a thick rope around his waist before entering the icy waters. “As I was making my way to the kid in the water, I didn’t know if he could potentially go under, and if he went under the ice, I knew I would have to go get him, so I had the rope attached so I could be pulled back out if I had to go under,” Brosonski explained to ABC New York station WABC.
The officer successfully reached the boy and pulled him to safety. The body camera video showed that the child had been in the water for about five minutes before calling out for aid. He was immediately treated on the scene and later transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia. Fortunately, he was able to return to school the following day.
Despite the outpouring of praise from the community, Brosonski remains humble about his heroic actions. “I feel it was my job,” he shared. “I feel really more embarrassed by all the attention. I would’ve gone in no matter what for anyone, whether I was working or not working. To me, it’s just another day.”
