Pennsylvania is mourning after three law enforcement officers were killed and two others critically wounded in an ambush while responding to a domestic call in York County on September 17. Officials have identified the fallen as Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser of the Northern York County Regional Police Department.
York County District Attorney Tim Barker confirmed that another Northern York detective and a York County Sheriff’s Office deputy were seriously injured but are currently stable in the hospital.
The suspect, 24-year-old Matthew James Ruth, was killed by police during a final shootout. Authorities said Ruth had been stalking his ex-girlfriend’s family, with reports saying he was dressed in camouflage and armed with an AR-15-style rifle. Trail camera footage later confirmed he had been lurking near the home.
When detectives returned to the residence just after 2 p.m. on September 17, they were met with a deadly ambush. Ruth opened fire with a suppressed weapon, striking multiple officers before being neutralized by law enforcement. Inside the home, investigators discovered shell casings from the initial attack and, in the basement, the body of a black Labrador belonging to the ex-girlfriend’s family that Ruth had killed.
“All actions by law enforcement were justified. They weren’t only justified, they were necessary,” Barker said. He praised the detective who fired the final shot and then rendered lifesaving aid: “He saved many lives that day. If the actor was not eliminated, who knows where this would have stopped.”
Court documents show Ruth had been charged earlier in the week with stalking, trespassing, loitering and prowling at night. Investigators believe the root cause of the tragedy was domestic violence.
Federal and state agencies — including the FBI, ATF and Pennsylvania State Police — are assisting in the investigation. Attorney General Pam Bondi pledged the full support of the federal government.
The ambush occurred just months after another York County officer was killed in the line of duty, underscoring the dangers officers face daily.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called it “an absolutely tragic and devastating day” for the state. “We grieve for the loss of life of the three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, and served this country,” he said.
As the investigation continues, the law enforcement community is left grappling with the loss of three dedicated officers whose courage and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
