The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) on October 1 announced Master Police Officer William Mechler, Officer Mark Neptune, Officer Jason Zimmerman and Officer Austin Vogel of the Tampa, Florida, Police Department as the Officers of the Month for August 2025. These officers rushed into a burning home to save a man who was trapped inside.
On August 9, after arriving at the scene, the responding officers entered a smoke-filled home that was already partially engulfed in flames. Crawling on the floor to avoid the heavy smoke, they located the homeowner near the front door and quickly dragged him outside to safety, despite rapidly advancing flames and intense heat. Shortly after the man was out of harm’s way, the fire was extinguished. As a result of these efforts, the rescued man was treated for smoke inhalation and is reported to be doing well.
“These officers are heroes, and their actions serve to highlight the countless acts of valor, which often go unnoticed and without the recognition or fanfare such acts deserve,” NLEOMF CEO Bill Alexander said. “We are humbled and proud to honor Master Police Officer William Mechler, Officer Mark Neptune, Officer Jason Zimmerman and Officer Austin Vogel as our Officers of the Month for August 2025.”
The Officer of the Month Award Program is sponsored by the Police Unity Tour and recognizes federal, state and local officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary law enforcement service and devotion to duty.
