A suspected drunk driver inadvertently had himself arrested by calling 9-1-1 to report what he believed was a wrong-way driver.
Little did he know that he was the one driving on the wrong side of the road, as revealed by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office in a recent Facebook post.
The bizarre incident, which occurred in March, gained attention after the sheriff’s office released both video footage and audio recordings of the driver’s 9-1-1 call.
“I’m on Highway 77 going north and there is somebody that is on the wrong side of the road,” the driver could be heard saying, adding that the other driver “almost ran me off the road.” He went on to describe the incident as “gnarly.”
However, when law enforcement arrived at the scene, it quickly became evident that the caller himself was the one driving against traffic — and he was intoxicated.
After a police officer conducted a traffic stop, he asked the driver: “Do you know why I stopped you?”
“Yeah, because I was on the wrong side of the road,” the driver replied candidly.
When questioned about the reason for his erratic driving, the driver sheepishly responded: “I must have missed an exit.”
He also confirmed that he was the same person who had made the initial 9-1-1 call.
According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, the driver had a blood alcohol content (BAC) over twice the legal limit.
“Thankfully, a Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputy was able to arrest this driver before anyone was seriously hurt,” the sheriff’s office stated.
The sheriff’s office also hoped that the “wild-but-true story” will serve as a reminder to the public to drive sober.
