
If the title of this article makes you uncomfortable, we get it. Nobody likes an officer who asks why. It’s annoying, disruptive and usually takes a perfectly good plan off course. The officer who just does it the way they were shown is easier to manage than the one who wants to understand it first.
This is probably why curious behavior gets trained out early in certain professions, and the normal majority largely accepts it as a tradeoff for accountability within constraints. But as much as curiosity can seemingly slow action, there’s a strong, research-based case for adding it back into training as an essential performance skill.
What curiosity actually does to the brain
Curiosity is a motivational state, and neuroscience has gotten pretty specific about what it produces. What’s even more relevant to training, though, is what curiosity does to self-monitoring. A 2025 study found that curiosity is closely involved in monitoring our own cognitive processes and guiding behavior toward reducing errors.[2]Néher, B. (2025). A curious officer is actively evaluating their own decisions as a situation develops, or unravels.
Curiosity impacts effort, too. When people are genuinely curious, they’ll push through significant cognitive effort to get to an answer, even when an easier option is sitting right there. For officers in high-stakes situations, that’s the difference between adapting to what’s actually in front of them and defaulting to the nearest familiar response.
Curiosity fills the information gap
Behavioral economist George Loewenstein’s foundational work on curiosity frames it as a response to perceived gaps between what a person knows and what they sense they need to know.3[3]Loewenstein, G. The sense of curiosity requires some awareness that a gap exists. An officer who doesn’t know what they don’t know won’t feel that pull toward inquiry. An officer who has been trained to actively scan for what’s missing, though, will.
This has direct implications for how training scenarios are structured and debriefed. If an officer leaves a scenario without a clear sense of what they didn’t fully understand, the learning stops there. If they leave with active questions about why a situation unfolded the way it did, or what they might have missed, that information gap becomes a driver of continued learning.
This dynamic is particularly visible in simulator training. The simulator’s primary value is that it creates a replayable environment where an officer can examine their own decision-making with some distance from it — but only if they’re trained to use it that way. Treated as a performance test, it measures. Treated as a learning environment, it develops. Which outcome you get comes down almost entirely to the mindset the officer brings in.
What this means for the training room
The goal here is reflection as a habit that runs underneath decisiveness, informing it so that when the situation demands adaptation, the officer has something to draw on beyond pattern-matching to a scenario that doesn’t quite fit.
That underlying cognitive function is built through the questions trainers and supervisors ask. “What did you do?” tells you about technique. “What were you thinking and what made you decide that?” tells you about reasoning and signals to officers that their reasoning matters, that the job requires thinking and not just execution. Officers who are regularly asked to articulate their decision-making become better at monitoring it in real time.
The standard is to treat post-scenario review as an inquiry rather than a correction. An officer who leaves a debrief still sitting with genuine uncertainty might be more productive than you think. We’re trying to target the information gap that Loewenstein describes and get the brain actively motivated to close it. The trainer who rushes to resolve that uncertainty too quickly may be eliminating the very thing that would have driven the officer to keep thinking.
The curious officer will always have more capacity than the one who was trained to wait for answers. Building that capacity is an intentional choice about what training is actually for. So don’t fear the why — actively encourage it.
