Throughout the day, Officer Nick Lutmer is dedicated to keeping the roads of Sioux City, Iowa, safe as part of the police department’s traffic unit. His presence on the streets serves as more than just a means of enforcement — it’s a deterrent that helps prevent accidents before they happen.
“I feel like it helps to prevent accidents but also potentially saves lives,” Lutmer told KTIV. “You may never know of an accident that could have happened that you could have prevented.”
After spending the day ensuring traffic laws are followed, Lutmer transitions from the streets to the court — this time as a high school basketball referee. Officiating games allows him to stay connected to a sport he’s passionate about while maintaining a healthier work–life balance.
“I played for four years in college,” he shares. “So, instead of coaching, it’s less time involvement, where I can still be involved in the game but not have to be gone every night of the week or dedicating so many hours of the week to coaching.”
Lutmer began refereeing as a hobby three years ago and believes having interests outside of law enforcement is key to his overall well-being.
“If you’re constantly thinking about work, especially if you get off work and talk to co-workers, you’re constantly talking about work and you’re never debriefing or getting away from work,” he said.
Lutmer encourages others to explore hobbies they enjoy — whether it’s working out, golfing or pursuing art. The Sioux City Police Department also recognized the importance of officers engaging with their community beyond the job.
“Officer Nick Lutmer is a graduate of Briar Cliff University, where he excelled in the classroom and on the basketball court,” the department said on Facebook. “Lutmer is a Sioux City police officer by day and a high school basketball official by night. Many of our officers also serve the community as coaches, mentors and volunteers.”
