The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) on April 1 announced Patrolman David Brosonski of the West Long Branch, New Jersey, Police Department as their Officer of the Month for February 2025. Patrolman Brosonski was selected for his actions when he rescued an 11-year-old boy who had fallen through the ice on a frozen lake.

On February 4, Patrolman Brosonski was the first officer on the scene for a child that had fallen through the ice on a frozen lake. With ice conditions rapidly deteriorating, Officer Brosonski navigated through the icy lake using his knees to break a path toward the victim. Despite water temperatures hovering around 36 degrees, he was able to reach the child, who was experiencing the onset of hypothermia and unable to move his limbs. Officer Brosonski successfully pulled the boy from the water, and he was later treated at a nearby hospital and released.

“Officer Brosonski’s quick response and training played a critical role in preventing a tragedy,” NLEOMF CEO William Alexander said. “His actions demonstrate the courage and selflessness that define law enforcement officers across the country.”

The Officer of the Month Award Program is sponsored by the Police Unity Tour and recognizes federal, state and local officers who distinguish themselves through exemplary law enforcement service and devotion to duty.
