Why
This virtual program will focus on law enforcement’s role in responding to two incidents that had a lasting effect on the LGBTQ+ community: the 1973 fire at the Upstairs Lounge in New Orleans and the 2016 mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. The panel will explore the differences in how each event was handled, including emergency procedures, agency coordination and public communication.
Panelists will also examine the broader impact these events had on community trust and how law enforcement practices have changed in response — particularly in areas such as officer training, community outreach and access to mental health support.
