The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) on June 30 announced that Police Officer First Class (POFC) Ian Lachapelle of the Fairfax County (Va.) Police Department is its Officer of the Month for May 2025. POFC Lachapelle was selected for his actions when he ultimately saved the lives of his two fellow officers who were taking fire at point-blank range from a driver of a vehicle they had stopped.

During a traffic stop, two officers encountered a 36-year-old driver after pulling them over for a speeding violation. While approaching the vehicle, the driver expressed agitation and refused to produce their identification.

Shortly after POFC Lachapelle arrived as a backup officer, the motorist opened fire from his vehicle on the officers involved. Two officers were struck while POFC Lachapelle returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect. The officers then administered first aid at the scene until medical personnel arrived and transported the motorist to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The two officers received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

“The response demonstrated by Police Officer First Class Lachapelle reflects the commitment law enforcement officers across the country bring to their work each day,” NLEOMF CEO William Alexander said.“His actions highlight the importance of training, preparedness and the responsibility officers carry to protect others, and we are proud to recognize his dedication and service as the May 2025 Officer of the Month.”
